The Civil War America s Second Revolution - 1658 Words

1860 marked the beginning of the Civil War, often dubbed as America’s â€Å"Second Revolution.† This war ushered in a new political landscape in which the federal government reclaimed political power over the states allowing it to commence a revitalization of the Constitution. This revitalization, which fell under the Era of Reconstruction, granted a large- scale social development for African Americans initiating this social revolution. Such a dramatic advancement for the â€Å"inferior race† sparked opposition amongst a largely white South provoking a â€Å"counter- revolutionary† campaign against the development blacks. The Civil War was ultimately an issue over states’ rights and South Carolina, the first state to secede, felt as though its rights were being violated and would continue to be mitigated during Lincoln’s term. According to South Carolina[’s] Declaration of Causes of Secession (December 1860), South Carolina saw the sa w that the government would go against the 10th Amendment which stated that the federal government is limited to the powers expressed within the Constitution and that states would exercise the power left unmentioned by the constitution. South Carolina perceives Lincoln as a threat— the whole Republican North as a threat. The Republican approach of a strong central government contradicted the largely Democratic South’s teachings.
